Chicago Tribune App Reviews

Works great!

Ive been using this app for the past 18 months through its various updates and its never disappointed me. The app does breaking news and top headlines really well. The only thing that they could add would be a full page replica of the paper copy. However, that could be really hard to see on a phone screen, so I understand why its not included.

Everything I need

All the Chicago and national news all day.

Awful

Very poorly constructed, much like the bulk of its content.

Good interface and navigation

Good interface and navigation allow me to quickly find the news I want to read.

Badly needs a decent programmer

The dates on stories are never accurate, like a story that I read 5 days ago is listed as being posted in the last couple hours. The stories that have already been read are usually marked as new, unread stories. The tech support link gives a phone number that goes straight to voicemail. Ect ect They badly need to fix the same problems that the app has had since its inception

Ripoff!

I pay a monthly subscription for digital online content. Embedded adverts cause my audio player to stop so adverts can play. No way to override and repeated attempts to resolve via customer service are met with automatic referral to useless FAQ. Will be cancelling subscription and can easily access content elsewhere online. Ripoff!

Cautiously Optimistic

Its been a while since Ive tried the Tribune app, I deleted the last one out of frustration and have been just using the website. The website has now become unusable on my iPhone due to the number of pop ups for various games or other items to download from the App Store and not being able to dismiss them in order to keep reading. So far so good on the app but will update as I see issues.

CHGO TRIB APP GOOD

Would like a better way to get to sections of paper

Good Bye

So the Chicago Tribune is going to a metered service like the New York Times. The difference? Every story in the Times is well written, substantial and worthy of either subscription or 10 articles. I look forward to reading each and every article. Many of the Tribs articles are two sentences long, such as - motorist killed by Union Pacific train in Palatine. Check back for more details. Most times, it never gets updated. Worthy of a 10 article spend? Nope. Or, my favorite, when a missing person case, such as the childs body found in a Chicago Park Lagoon, gets solved but they dont take time to write a new story they just write a few new opening sentences and keep the rest of the original article where the identity is a mystery. You are no New York Times, and I am no longer a reader. Its just not worth it.

Essential app

I have a full subscription to the Tribune. This app works well when I use my Trib subscriber login. Unless I use this app on the mobile phone, under the new policy, articles are counted against the ten per month. Oddly, Tribune e-mails me Daywatch but seems not to know I am a subscriber. I had less trouble with that on my laptop, but more testing is needed. App is fine, easy access to articles. Headlines are not the same, from paper to Daywatch to this app, and app articles are arranged by time released or shall I say printed. It would be nice if Tribune pointed out to subscribers more easily how to be recognized as one person on all devices. There are features I have not tried, like save article to read later.

News

Enjoy reading about what is happening in Chicago. Moved away from there over 36 years ago, still stay connected wth the Trib app.

Timely Articles

This app sends me notifications of new articles, which I can scan prior to the regular edition. I like the timeliness of the news I receive.

Dont waste your time

This app has gone downhill to the point, Im deleting it from my phone. The sections arent updated such that "top stories" and "breaking news" sections has articles that are days old. Also, the tribune just switched to limiting access to all services (instead of a select few) and if you accidentally click on a story, it counts against your monthly usage without any recourse. It used to be my go to app but that ship has sailed. Hello Sun Times app.

Garbage

So deceiving not knowing which articles are subscriber based until you click on it and bam, your 20 free per month are gone before youve spent 30 minutes. Seriously, youre charging for misspelled words, grammar of a 1st grader, and some of the articles showing up twice? Take a cue, you have 1 positive and the rest negative.

Really bad

Worst news app by far!

Keeps me up to date

Love "checking in" with the Trib throughout the day!!Up-to-the-minute news locally, nationally and around the world.

Good app

This is the best app on phone and Apple Watch a must have if you read the trib

Is this what has come to view a news story

Metering how many stories can read is too much. I will get the same news stories from the WGN app. Your cost for the stories to read is one price on the app but on the subscription site another.

Waste of time

What happened? Every story is "subscriber based" waste of time, delete from your phone.

Recent Upgrades Problematic

Im a long time user, but with a recent update suddenly the in-app experience has become intolerable. As you scroll down through the stories, the app is constantly updating and sending you back to the the top. Incredibly frustrating....unable to get thru the the entire scroll of top stories.
